For easily distracted brains 🐦

Got distracted?
Pick up right where you left off.

Crumbs is a little sparrow that lives in your Mac menu bar. As you hop between apps, windows and tabs, it quietly picks up the breadcrumbs. When you can't remember what you were doing, double-tap ⌃ and it takes you right back.

Hopping between apps…

Three moments you know too well

1

“Wait… what was I doing?”

Double-tap ⌃ Control in any app and a bar slides up from the bottom of your screen: where you just were, how long you stayed, and what you said you'd do there.

  • ↑↓ to pick, Enter to jump back to that exact app, document or tab
  • Just start typing to leave yourself a note — it reminds you next time you come back
  • Works across multiple Chrome profiles, all in one trail

“So many things open. Which one first?”

Hit Open on the bar and Crumbs turns everything you touched today into a to-do list — and tells you why one comes first: half-finished work, the things you spent the most time on, and the ones you keep coming back to rise to the top.

  • Check off, track progress in four steps, drag to reorder
  • Closed windows leave the list on their own, so it never piles up
  • Something just popped into your head? Toss it in the list

“Where did my week go?”

Weekly review sorts your time into your own projects: where each day went, how it compares to last week, and which things ate the most hours. Add a few keywords and it files things for you.

  • Time across your whole Mac, not just the browser
  • See how many times you pulled yourself back from a distraction

Getting distracted never costs you points

Finishing something, moving a task one step forward, coming back from your phone to the real work — each drops a crumb into your jar. We reward coming back, instead of scolding you for drifting off.

Set up in a minute

  1. 1Drag to Applications

Open the downloaded .dmg and drag the sparrow into the Applications folder next to it.

  2. 2Open it

Open Crumbs 麵包屑 from Applications and a little sparrow appears in the menu bar. Then eject the installer disk (⏏ in the Finder sidebar).

  3. 3Allow two permissions

Accessibility: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility → turn on “Crumbs 麵包屑”.
Browser automation: macOS asks the first time you switch to Chrome / Safari — click OK.

Why these two permissions?

Accessibility

Lets Crumbs read window titles (say, which file is open in Word), listen for the double-tap ⌃, and switch you back to that window. It works without it, but only records app names.

Browser automation

Lets Crumbs know which page you're on and switch you back to that tab. It only reads tab URLs and titles — never page content.

FAQ

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything stays on your own Mac (~/Library/Application Support/Crumbs). No account, no server. Crumbs only records app names, window titles, page URLs and time spent — it never reads content, takes screenshots or logs your keystrokes.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free right now.

Is it open source?

Yes. All the code is on GitHub under the MIT license, so you can check exactly what it records and confirm nothing is sent anywhere. Issues and ideas are welcome — and if you like it, a ⭐ helps a lot.

Is the app in English?

Yes. Crumbs follows your Mac's language by default, and you can switch between English and Traditional Chinese anytime: sparrow in the menu bar → 🌐 Language, or the 🌐 picker at the bottom of the main window.

Is this an ADHD app?

It was built for brains that jump around — ADHD or not. It doesn't diagnose or treat anything; it just helps with the moment of “what was I doing?” after an interruption, which is hard for everyone and especially hard with ADHD.

Does it work on Intel Macs?

Only Apple silicon (M1 / M2 / M3 / M4) for now. An Intel build is planned.

Why isn't it on the Mac App Store?

App Store apps can't read other apps' windows or switch your browser tabs — the two things Crumbs needs most. So it's signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple instead, and opens without any security warnings.

Does it keep counting when I walk away?

No. It stops after 5 minutes of inactivity, or when your screen locks or your Mac sleeps.

How do I uninstall it?

Click the sparrow in the menu bar → Quit, then drag Crumbs 麵包屑 from Applications to the Trash. To delete your data too, remove ~/Library/Application Support/Crumbs.

I only work in the browser. Is there a Chrome version?

Yes — a Chrome extension (a sparrow on the right edge of the page plus a side panel) is getting ready for the Chrome Web Store. You can already load it from the GitHub repo.
